Letter from the Executive Chairman

We know that an All-Star Team is defined as “a team made up only of top performers who are the most skilled and accomplished,” but how do you apply this to a new start-up pharmaceutical company?

You have one or two key members who have deep pharmaceutical experience and have built many pharmaceutical plants, then you slowly add other members of the team that support and complement their skill sets to cover all aspects of what is required to transform an older facility into a state-of-the art one. Taking all the best practices and learnings from all those years of doing what worked and what did not work and applying them to our needs short- and long-term.

Friday, June 8, 2018, was the first time that Peter Billiaert and I, along with Jay Levine from NXL Architects, went to inspect the existing Pharmetics GMP-approved pharmaceutical packaging facility in Burlington to see if there was any potential. Working with Jay was a no-brainer for me as I had a long personal relationship with him and his family, growing up three doors away from each other. His father Allan, who recently passed away, was also an architect and together they worked with my Dad (Leslie) to design and renovate many of the manufacturing plants at Novopharm in the GTA.

Peter is the Kawhi Leonard of the Raptors for EmpowerPharm! Peter works diligently ensuring that every single aspect of the team is working in harmony, efficiently and effectively moving at warp speed. He’s built and renovated many pharmaceutical facilities in the past, both for Novopharm and Teva globally, taking all his learnings that have now become intuitive. Being Scottish, in his own words, he’ll always make sure that we get the best value for the dollar, being one of the best negotiators.

In all the years of building pharmaceutical facilities, Peter has never had to face the trades going on strike during construction. This year was the first time in 30 years that the sheet metal workers went on strike. They went on strike on May 6th, and thankfully returned to work on July 8th. Unfortunately, this labour dispute will delay the completion of the production facility to late 2019. Like the Raptors, the collective members of NXL, Crossey Engineering Mechanical and Electrical, Engineering Link, Allyant Design and Construction and the EmpowerPharm team are working that much harder, utilizing their existing talent to work around this challenging situation.

Together, we will overcome this minor hiccup of timing as there is heart, grit and skin in the game now with the closing of our first Friends and Family private placement to ensure that we’re all aligned to be successful.

Go EmpowerPharm Go!!

Yours truly,
